There is nothing about Robert Southey except for his opinions in the letter.

Robert Southey is concerned about the employment of children in factories and the long hours they work.

• Why did the author create this piece of work? What is the intent?
His intent is to show what it is like for a child to work in a factory, and how they do not have a good childhood or education.

• Why did the author choose this particular format?
 It helps the reader to feel like they are at the factory seeing the things for themselves.

• Who is the intended audience? Who was the author thinking would receive this?
 It could be anyone, but more likely it is for the people live in England, to show them what is happening in their country.

 He is showing how bad it is working in factories for these children, and he is saying that it should not be like this.

 Yes, it gives a good look at the author’s negative opinion of these factories.

 He is probably a kind and concerned person that cares a lot about children.

 During this time a lot of people are poor.  The children are a problem for the parents and the parish.

• Under what circumstances was the piece created and how does the piece reflect those circumstances?
 It was created at a time when children worked in factories, and there were people who were not happy about this.  It gives a negative opinion.

 There is a controversy between the people who care about kids and those people who want to use the kids to make money.

 The author cares about the kids.

 The author had a first-hand perspective.

 We know parents in England can’t afford to take care of their children.  In this article it tells how the parish and parents send children to work in the factories.

We can’t tell if the opinion of the factory owner or the author is more popular, and we can’t be sure if the factory owner is telling the truth.

Research other articles from the time period.

I can’t tell without doing research.

The author leaves out how much they are paid, where they sleep and if they seemed healthy or not.  I don’t know why he left it out.

     A: This main topic relate to the Luddites and the change in the way that cotton was produced.

      A: It relates to the change in the way cities and towns grew and changed at the time, with factories bringing more people to an urban life.

      A: This artifact was the teacher's choice, and i spend about a hour and a half on it.  


3. What insights and understanding have you gained from the creation and/or processing of this artifact?

      A: I learned that many people were upset that factories were taking away jobs from the cotton workers in small towns.  They were willing to fight for their cause.

      A:Yes, I spend a lot of time playing that game to learn about the Luddites.

Artifact 3 (Headline News!)

Violence at the Factories!!
           Starting in April, the Luddites attacked
William Cartwright’s mill.  Only a few soldiers protected
the mill against 150 attackers.  Two of the attackers
were killed, but no soldier was killed.  Later, someone
tried to kill William Cartwright.  In April, William Horsfall
was killed.

          The Luddites are angry, because they have lost their jobs. 
 The factories use women and children as workers. There are
 less job done by hand, and more done by machines.
         
           Spies have helped the government to stop the
 luddites.  By June outbreaks of Luddite violence has
begun to slow down.  The government is continuing to look
 in to the problem.

Artifact 4 (Biographical Spotlight)!

                                                                            
                                                                         
        Florence Nightingale was born in May 12, 1820, in Italy.  She came from a well-connected, wealthy, British family.  From an early age she felt a calling by God to help others, which led her to be a nurse.  She worked as a nurse during the Crimean War.  She was so kind to the wounded soldiers that she got a reputation for her loving spirit!  She was named “Lady of the Lamp” because she made her rounds at night with a lamp.  From what she learned from the war, she opened a nursing school.  She help changed the way that people look at the world of the medicine.  She died in 1910, at the age of 90.

1. London, the capital of England, was the center of business.
2. Manchester was where Southey saw the children working in factories.
3. Huddersfield is where, in April 1812, the Luddites attacked William Cartwright's mill.

Artifact 7: (J. M. W. Turner!)

Joseph Mallord William Turner was an English Romantic landscape painter, watercolorists and print maker that lived from 1775 ro 1851.  Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivaling history painting. He had a tough childhood, with his mother becoming mentally unstable and his younger sister dying. It was probably because of this that he was sent to live with his uncle. It was at this time that he became interested in art. His father would display some of his artwork in the window of his shop. He went to school at the Royal Art Academy when he was 14 years old. After that he began painting more landscapes and became famous for them throughout Europe.

Artifact 9 (Student Free Choice!)

I wrote a diary by a boy that was sold to work in a cotton factory.

March 14, 1812
        I was taken from the orphanage today with a group of other kids. We were sent to factory to make cotton. The place seems dirty and smells bad.  No one looks happy at all.

March 25, 1812
        I am working as a scavenger picking up scraps of cloth.  I run around picking them up from the dirty floor.  The machines are loud and dangerous.  One boy got his finger cut off this morning. 

April 26, 1812
        I am always tired.  I work for 12 hours a day, and the food sucks!  Even though we didn’t have much food at the orphanage it was still better than here. 

May 15th, 1812
        The clothes I had when I got here are now so dirty. I am not a scrapper anymore, and I work on the machines. They move so fast and I am scared of getting hurt. A friend wouldn’t work so he was punished by being whipped. There are no windows and the air is horrible here.

August 13, 1812
        I want to escape. My friend and I planning to do it, but if we are caught they will put us in leg irons. We will get less food and they will always be watching us. Even with that maybe happening it is still something I need to do. If I stay here I feel like I will die anyways.

Artifact 13: Gapminder Analysis~*

CO2 Emissions

        I chose this graph to look at the change in pollution through the industrial revolution. Pollution is an important topic, and I wanted to see what it was like in the 19th century.  At the start of the 19th century, The United Kingdom had the most CO2 emissions in the world.  It is also had the largest population and the highest income per person.  As we go through the 19th century, CO2 emissions, population and income per person all go up.  What is interesting is that countries like The United States and Germany go up faster.  By the end of the 19th century, The United States had more people than the United Kingdom.  By 1905 they would also have a higher income per person and more CO2 emissions.  In 100 years, The United Kingdom went from being the richest and most powerful country to having other countries become better than it. 

Life Expectancy

        I chose this graph because how long a person lives is an important part of a society.  At the start of the 19 century a person in The United Kingdom only lived for 40 years.  By the end of the 19th century they would be living almost 50 years.  During the first half of the 19th century the life expectancy did not go up much.  The second half is where most of the change happened.  I think this happened because in the second half there are more jobs and people were making more money, so they can live better lives.  The life expectancy went up steadily in the 19th century, but around 1915, World War I it dropped a lot.  This happened because so many people died in the war.

Smaller Families, Longer Lives

I chose this graph because I thought it was interesting that the more children people had the shorter the life expectancy.  At the start of the 19th century the average woman in The United Kingdom had about five kids.  By the end of the 19th century the average woman had between 3 and 4 children.  As the income goes up the number of children goes down. With more women working in factories, and not from home, there was less time to have a family.  Also people moved to the cities where there wasn’t a lot of room to have big families.
